{32} Don't Do it for Your Resume

“It will look good on your resume.”

Personally, these words make me cringe. As a questioner, I am perplexed in many layers:

Why would I do something for the sole purpose of writing it down on a piece of paper? …to prove to someone ELSE I am qualified & worthy to work? Is it my perception that others are consciously or subconsciously painting a picture of a possible “dream job” that I can attain ONLY if I develop said resume? …And somehow, because the picture has been painted, others can strongly encourage me to do things I do not authentically desire to do …because that’s how I’ll attain “my” “dream job.” Why would I want a “dream job” that is the culmination of things I am not inspired to do individually?

I have never taken on a task “for my resume.” Yet, lo and behold, I ADORE my resume:

  • My bachelor’s and master’s degrees (plus one year as a dance major in Colorado because 💃🏼 a girl’s gotta explore),
  • My life coach and yoga certifications,
  • A few years as a barista,
  • A stint as a spa receptionist (ahhh memories of FREE massages!),
  • Two years as a dance instructor alongside my best friend,
  • Professional work as an evaluator with the LA Unified School District and Boys & Girls Clubs of America,
  • A yoga instructor at multiple studios - fostering treasured connections across the country,
  • And - my latest, beautiful addition - business owner of Yes&.

I love my resume. I love that I’ve held jobs for years, and have left some after three months. I love that each bullet feels meaningful - because of lessons learned, authentic courage practiced, & curiosities explored.

I love that I am just as proud to speak about my work as a dance instructor at age 16 as I am about my suit-jacket work at age 25. I love that my resume portrait is truly my own; that somehow, the once individual pieces fit together to create one beautiful, cohesive purpose.

Do it because you love it, & trust. Trust all the things you love will fit together to create a stunning, impressive, one-of-a-kind resume that will take you far beyond the limits of someone else’s opinion. Trust that you are already worthy to live the life you authentically aspire. Trust what calls you along the way.

Align & experience your full, authentic life.
